PHOENIX— With Taijuan Walker having to opt for Tommy John surgery, the Diamondbacks had to fill his spot in the rotation on Friday night. Enter Matt Koch (pronounced Cook).

Even though the Diamondbacks would eventually lose this game tonight by the score of 4-1, it wasn’t because of Koch. Koch went six strong innings, only allowing one run, on two hits, while striking out 4 in a fill-in role for the Diamondbacks bullpen.

The problem tonight was (for the first time this season) the Diamondbacks offense. They would only manage one hit all night (“One hit? That’s all we got? One God D*mn hit?”). Yeah, one hit. And it didn’t come from Goldy, or Peralta, or Marte….or any of the other normal starters. It came in the 8th Inning from Walker, who was pinch-hitting in the pitchers spot. Up until that point, the Padres starter (Tyson Ross) had a no-hitter going.

As a matter of fact, the Diamondbacks failed to even get a man to second base before the 8th since Dyson walked and stole second in the 1st Inning.

Even with all of that, the Diamondbacks still managed to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th inning on Walker’s double to Center Field. A gift, as seen by some, after Cordero mismanaged the line drive shot by Walker and it went over his head in Center Field.

In the top of the 9th, after tying it up in the last half-inning, the Diamondbacks allowed 3 runs to the Padres. Brad Boxberger would come in for the hold (and potential win)…..and then gave up 3-straight singles, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits (2 earned). The Diamondbacks defense also had 3 errors this game, two in the 9th Inning.

So, in the end, here is where we stand in Dbacks Nation:

Arizona has dropped the first game of the series for the first time this season. They are still yet to lose a series this year. They are still 3 games up in first place on the Colorado Rockies, and 6 games up on the team they just lost to. They still have two more games to finish off this series. The next game is tomorrow at 5:10PM at Chase Field, which is also Archie Bradley Bobblehead night at the park.
