Rockets Clinch Playoff Spot with Win Over Pelicans

NEW ORLEANS — During a weekend that is dominated by the NCAA Tournament, there was a professional basketball game being played in New Orleans on Sunday night. Two teams on the opposite ends of the playoff picture squared off in the Smoothie King Arena. The Houston Rockets came to town needing just one more win to clinch a playoff appearance for the seventh year in a row. The home town Pelicans, on the other hand, were just hoping to stop a skid of seven losses in their last eight games.

Tim Frazier’s Impact Performance Leads to Big Pelicans Victory

On Wednesday night, the Pelicans took on a struggling Washington Wizards team at the Smoothie King Center.  After a four-game losing streak, Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry was looking to make a change that would spark his team. With injured point guard Elfrid Payton out until January, Gentry inserted former Wizard Tim Frazier into the starting lineup.

Despite the Wizards recent struggles, they had been one of the teams that had contributed to the Pelicans losing streak. Elfrid Payton Continues to Prove That He Is A Worthy Replacement of Rajon Rondo

The New Orleans Pelicans lost two major contributors to free agency this offseason: DeMarcus Cousin and Rajon Rondo. The average NBA fan saw Cousins as the bigger loss. To those who followed the Pelicans closely, it was clear that Rondo would be missed more.

While Cousins was an All-Star as recently as last season. However, he clogged up the floor on offense and the Pelicans clearly played better after his season-ending injury. Rondo, on the other hand, was the team’s floor general and played tenacious defense. The Pelicans playoff run last year highlighted Rondo’s skills as many of his teammates credited him for their success.

Pelicans Break Franchise Record for Single Game Points Behind Mirotic’s 36

The Smoothie King Center was back in action on Friday night as a sell-out crowd packed the arena for the New Orleans Pelicans 2018-19 home opener.

 

It was an impressive showing from New Orleanians with Friday night high school football gathering most of Louisiana’s attention and with the Saints in the middle of a probable playoff-bound season.

 

The Pels fans who turned out would not be disappointed.

 

After an impressive win in Houston on Wednesday, the Pelicans came into Friday nights’ game against the Sacramento Kings as 11 point favorites and were hoping to start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2011.
